NCNPS Advocacy

ADVOCACY: To promote the use and conservation of plants native to the Southeast US and their ecological habitats.

Our aim:

  • Raise awareness about the ecological importance of native plants in supporting biodiversity, pollinators, and ecosystem health.
  • Encourage native plant use in landscaping, gardening, and restoration projects instead of non-native or invasive species.
  • Influence policy, planning, and legislation by advocating for native plant friendly regulations, sustainable land management, and conservation of native habitats.

How YOU can help!

  • Talk with your local, state and federal elected officials about the critical importance of native plants for wildlife and pollinator habitat, stormwater and flood management, carbon sequestration, and climate resiliency.
  • Recommend strategies for encouraging the use of native plants and banning harmful invasive species in your town, county, and state-wide.
  • Speak up in support of state and federal legislation to conserve natural habitat and protect rare species.
  • Urge local nurseries to sell more native plants and stop selling invasive species.
  • Join forces with like-minded allies, including Audubon, NC Wildlife, and Sierra Club Chapters, conservation land trusts, and garden clubs.

Making PROGRESS in NC!

Many towns and counties in North Carolina recently have passed policies to encourage the planting of native plants and trees and preventing the use of invasive plants! Check out these actions and consider asking your municipality to take similar action.
In 2023, the NC General Assembly approved the NC Native Plant Act. But more can be done, including a ban on the sale of invasive plants and protections of native plant gardening in HOAs.
