NC Sandhills Gameland Hike
Hoffman, NC
Sunday, October 17, 2021
10 am – 12 pm

Notes from botanist Bruce Sorrie who will be leading this tour: “We will drive on sand roads, flat or with gentle slopes. We will make several stops for short, easy walks into good habitat. No more than a couple hundred yards at any stop. Folks should wear low cut hiking boots or running shoes. There will be no bugs that late in the season. Here are some of the plant species that we will see and discuss on our tour of the NC Sandhills Game Land.

Longleaf Pine – dominant tree
Wiregrass – dominant in the herbaceous layer
Sandhill Chaffhead – red-purple heads
Michaux’s Sumac – federally endangered low shrub
Flat-topped Goldenrod – bright yellow heads in dense arrays
Splitbeard Bluestem – a handsome grass
Elliott’s Indiangrass – a handsome grass

We should see all of these and more on our tour.”

This hike is for NCNPS members only. Walks will be limited in size. Pets are not allowed.

Hikes will only proceed with 5 or more participants registered by 5 PM, 2 days prior to the hike.
