From Mary:
Since joining the horticulture staff at the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens in 2017, I’ve discovered a deep joy in seeking out and nurturing native plants in my own garden. My property spans six acres of forest and a half-acre of sunny, open space. When we bought and developed the land, I made a conscious decision not to have a lawn, but instead to fill the space with plants that offer year-round beauty, food for the critters that call this place home, and color in every season. I affectionately refer to my home as Wood Haven. Every tree, plant, and creature—big or small—holds a special place in my heart. I don’t see it as my property; I see myself as a steward to the land and all the life it supports. “

Here, you’ll encounter well over 200 native plant species, see how I’ve learned to coexist with my local herd of deer, witness my efforts to manage water runoff, and enjoy a peaceful .3-mile hike along my forest path.”

Please be sure to wear sturdy shoes as we explore this little corner of nature together!”
