We will walk a portion of that trail, then drive over to Camp Hatcher Rd (east on 24 to Nine Mile Rd). Dirt Rd is about 2 miles with a small road sign. We will walk in about 1/2 mile to explore both sides for carnivorous and savanna plants.
Our Guide: Jeannie Kraus – After a BA in biology from Greensboro College, Jeannie earned an MA in botany from UNC CH. Botany experience was gained with NC State Parks & Natural Heritage Program. Her career as a Natural Science curator/educator at NC Maritime Museum was followed by seasonal work with Carolina Ocean Studies, Shackleford Horse tours, Trinity Center & UNC Institute of Marine Sciences. Volunteering finds her with Master Gardeners, Rachel Carson Reserve, NC Coastal Federation, Lower Neuse Bird Club & Sierra Club. She’s been a member of NC NPS since 1978.
Please wear sturdy shoes. Long pants are suggested. Bring insect repellent and water. There are no restroom facilities at these sites, but there is a Speedway gas station a short distance from the Patsy Pond Trail.
Jeannie is an excellent birder – you may also want to bring binoculars to check out the birds she identifies for us.
