Barton Creek Native Meadow Cleanup

Almost 2 years ago, our chapter worked with UNCC Botanical Gardens and University City Partners to install an all-native meadow at the top of the Barton Creek Greenway extension that had recently been finished. In the fall of 2021, the society returned to lay down mulch and do some maintenance.

It’s once again time to tend to our meadow and keep it healthy as a great example of what our parks could look like with the beauty of native plants. Our goal for this event is to remove aggressive weeds including some invasives, pick up trash, spread mulch, and hopefully share some knowledge in the process.

After a walkthrough of the meadow, we’ll spend a few minutes helping volunteers identify some of our natives as well as the more common weeds we’ll be removing before we get to work.

What to bring:

Please wear close-toed shoes and bring your own gardening gloves. We will have hand snips and other tools available for the more stubborn weeds, though most of the work should not require tools. We will have a water cooler on hand, but we recommend you bring your own water bottle, as well as sunscreen, knee pads, or anything else you may need. Shovels and buckets will be provided to spread the mulch that University City Partners is delivering.

Parking:

This meadow is located next to the Walden Court Apartments, but due to their parking rules, we recommend you park near Blaze Pizza & City Barbecue across JW Clay Blvd and walk roughly 200 yds to the cleanup site. We will have signage visible from JW Clay Blvd.

The event is finished.
