Leafless Tree Identification
Leafless Tree Identification
Saturday, February 7 1:00PM Asheville Botanical Garden
Using a simple tree guide book for native trees, we will examine twig samples at tables in small groups.
Look at size, color, shape, branch pattern, buds and leaf scars.
A leaf scar is where last year’s leaf abscised: separated.
Abscission: the falling away of a leaf or other structure caused by the breakdown of cells at its base.
With book keys and mentors everyone will learn tree ID basics.
If weather allows, we will try our skills outside at ABG.
Carrie Blair has studied trees since 1977, taught many classes, led hundreds of field trips, and begins her 5th year of Leafless Tree ID in
Transylvania County for Master Gardeners and the public 2/4 until April 22 (12 weeks). Classes free, in the Brevard area.
