Triad Chapter – Native Seed Workshop

Join us at 6:30pm, Wednesday, November 5th at the Kathleen Clay Edwards Library for a workshop on collecting, preparing and sowing native seeds. We will have seeds from several varieties of plants available but, you are encouraged to bring one of your own to process. It is recommended to keep seeds in a labeled storage container like a paper bag.

For the meeting we will watch a portion of Dr. Larry Mellichamp’s video on seed preparation and sowing. Afterwards, we will break into small groups to work on preparing seeds. There will also be a brief demo on winter sowing.

These comprehensive guidelines provide crucial insights into responsible seed collection practices. Whether you’re a seasoned conservationist or a novice gardener, this resource offers valuable advice to ensure your seed gathering aligns with ethical and ecological principles.

Below is a list of resources that have been shared from the Land of the Sky Chapter when they did a recent event on Seed Collection & Preparation.

Seed collection, cleaning, storage, and planting books

Here are some helpful books.  My personal favorite is Jan Midgley’s self-published, book.  I do own all three and Cullina’s books are wonderful and I usually look at his book and Jan’ when I have questions. If you are interested in other native plant books here is a link to our recommended book list.
