“Forest Forensics” Field Trip at a private Haw River preserve in Graham, NC

Visit a private 50 acre nature preserve just west of the Haw River and hike 1.5 miles on mowed/sandy trails along the river and through uplands.

Examine the biodiversity of the vegetation of different ages and types and make conjectures via the principles of “forest forensics” about the history of each site.  The presence and predominance of different ages and species of trees including old growth individuals reveal a wealth of information about the past 100 years and the future.

Examine the stark evidence of a massive flood that occurred July 6-7 during tropical storm Chantal and consider how plants in the floodplain adapt to such events.  Challenge yourself to identify and learn some of the 200+ species  of plants identified in this area.

Meet at 5350 E Greensboro Chapel Hill Rd. just NW of the Union bridge.  Carpool if possible.

Register here, cap of 20, NCNPS members have priority.  Registration opens to non-members Sept 22.
