Field Trip to Private Preserve on the Haw River – Eastern Alamance County
Here’s another chance to see the Dunsons’ preserve – in spring this time (we visited last year in September.) We’re hoping to see rare waterleaf in bloom as well as some other interesting species such as wild comfrey, columbine, painted buckeye, green dragon, etc. Bill Dunson will be our leader. He would also love help in compiling a plant list for the property.
The property is along the western side of the Haw River at the Union Bridge in easternmost Alamance County (about halfway between Saxapahaw and Chicken Bridges) There are some huge trees, and an aboriginal fish weir perhaps more than 600 years old. Another aspect of this 48 acre nature preserve is to illustrate the significant value of such private efforts when so much habitat is being destroyed by development.
The walk route is a loop trail, about 1 mile long, with side branches. The footing in sand and clay is cleared but not graded so there are some partially rough parts. There is a 50 foot hill to climb and descend so a walking stick can be handy.
