Meet Our Shinn Grant Recipients
**This event will be held in-person at Reedy Creek Nature Center and virtually via Zoom. Register here for the Zoom event!**
The Tom and Bruce Shinn Fund provides several grants up to $1000 each year to support undergraduate and graduate students that are researching North Carolina’s native plants and habitats.
In 2022, 10 students received these awards to support ongoing research. 4 of these students will be presenting on their work and taking questions. Debra Murray, chair for our Grants Committee, will discuss the grant and introduce our recipients. Each of the following students will have 15 minutes to present their work, followed by 5 minutes for questions:
Merry Conlin – Status and habitat of Raven’s Seedbox (Ludwigia ravenii)
Brandon Wheeler – Locust Pocus: Species Delimitation in Robinia of the Southern Appalachians
Ryan O’Connell – Assessing impacts of timber management actions on mountain heartleaf (Hexastylis contracta), a rare understory plant
Katrina DeWitt – Direct and indirect impacts of the environment on the native pitcher plant Sarracenia purpurea through plant morphology and microbial interactions.
