Using Science to Guide Conservation in the Triad Area with Misty Buchanan

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The Natural Heritage Program is a small state program with a big mission: to inventory North Carolina’s natural areas and use the information to create a network of nature preserves that will protect our natural heritage for future generations.

Misty Buchanan, Deputy Director for Natural Heritage, Division of Land and Water Stewardship, Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, will discuss current research and conservation projects, including how field biologists explore and document North Carolina’s flora and fauna, how we determine which species are common and secure versus rare and imperiled, and how the Natural Heritage Program works across North Carolina to create land conservation agreements with government agencies, land trusts, and private landowners.

Rare plant species and recent conservation projects in the Triad area will also be discussed.

Misty Buchanan was born in Fort Bragg, NC and grew up in Fayetteville (Central NC Sandhills) and Marion (Western NC Foothills). After attending college “up North,” Misty returned to NC to earn her M.S. degree in Botany at NC State University. After working for a short time as an Environmental Consultant at a private consulting firm and then Conservation Ecologist at NC Botanical Garden, Misty joined the Natural Heritage Program in 2002. Since then, Misty has served as state Botanist, Natural Area Inventory Manager, and currently Program Director. Misty lives in Durham with her family and enjoys spending time outdoors, especially at Eno River State Park.

This program is free and open to the public, all are welcome!
