Sharon Day on Native Plants for Waterside Plantings

(7 p.m. (welcome earlier to say hello))
Event Sponsor: Triad Chapter

Sharon Day scouting for and collecting seeds via horseback! By Stacey Traviglia

Sharon Day will speak about native plants and how to use them in waterside plantings.  Sharon is a co-owner of Mellow Marsh Farm and propagates over 200 species of North Carolina natives.  She will provide information on selecting the right species for ponds, stream, and wetlands as well as proper planting techniques for wet areas.

Sharon founded Mellow Marsh Farm, one of North Carolina’s primary producers of native plants, over 20 years ago.  As Mellow Marsh Farm’s primary propagator, Sharon hand-collects seed on foot, in waders, by boat, and on horseback and has developed propagation protocols for over 200 native species.  Sharon serves as the nursery representative to the NC Invasive Plant Council, she was a member of NC DNR’s Working Group for development of the NC Stormwater Design Manual, and she is a member of the Chatham County Agriculture Review Board.  She also serves on the Steering Committee for the Cullowhee Native Plants conference.

Tim Hanauer of Earth Graphics “Planning and Pruning Through the Ecologic Cycle”

(7 PM--welcome early to say hello)
Event Sponsor: Triad Chapter

Understanding the Piedmont ecology will lead the advanced gardener into making right choices as to tree selection and maintenance, as well as best practices when introducing new native plants into the environment. We will cover the four phases of natural ecologic development in the Piedmont, how to select trees to remain within that environment, how and when to prune in that environment, and how to avoid mistakes in the plant introduction process.

Tim Hanauer is Founder and President of Earth Graphics, a unique residential landscape company. He continues to work as an active designer. Tim has applied his 29 years of landscape design experience (21 as a Registered NC Landscape Contractor) to projects developed on three continents. Tim’s pragmatic approach to plant selection and arrangement has developed out of years of constant observation. He specializes in a plant pallet that extends from the coast of South Carolina to the mountains of Virginia.
