Habitat Description:

Var. caroliniana: In acidic, sandy, open woodlands, especially woodlands around granitic flatrocks, and also on rocky mafic slopes. This variety has a restricted range in NC, limited to the southeastern Piedmont. Mostly occurs atop rock outcrops and in woodland openings. Rare in NC Piedmont & Coastal Plain.

Var. pensylvanica: Open woodlands, especially calcareous, but also in sandy soils of the Coastal Plain. This is the most widely distributed of the 2 varieties in NC, found in the Sandhills and eastern Piedmont, the central Coastal Plain, and disjunct to the Outer Banks of northern Dare County and in the Mountains in Macon County. Rare throughout NC.
