Var. grandiflora: In thin soils of rock outcrops, especially granitic flatrocks. Recorded from 2 mountain counties and one northern piedmont county in NC. NC Natural Heritage NC Status for this variety is SR-O; NC Rank S1; Global Rank G5T4T5.
Var. harveyana: Disturbed areas; native of farther west. Rare throughout NC (Weakley 2015).
