Mountains-to-Sea Trail Phenology Walk - April 10 - cancelled(8 - 11 AM)
Event Sponsor: Blue Ridge Chapter
Join the Blue Ridge Chapter for an early morning hike to see what’s blooming along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail!
Important update: All of the wildflower phenology walks for April have been cancelled to comply with the stay-at-home order in place for North Carolina. You can still participate in the project online through iNaturalist if you want to get involved. We will post tutorials throughout the month to help you get started and stay in touch with what’s blooming.
This spring, the Blue Ridge Chapter of the NC Native Plant Society is having regularly scheduled guided walks to explore what is in bloom along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The purpose of these walks is to record what is in bloom when and where on iNaturalist, so bring a camera or cell phone to take pictures if you would like to participate in our phenology project.
We will meet Friday mornings at 8 AM at Osborne Mountain Overlook near milepost 278 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Please feel free to join us! We will walk about 1.25 miles north along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail until it crosses US 421, and will provide a shuttle back from the northern end of the walk to the overlook.
This trail is easy hiking with some rocks and moderate inclines through a variety of habitats ranging from grazed/mowed fields, to sub-climax white pine forests, to climax hardwood forests with numerous light gaps and a great display of spring ephemerals. Please come prepared for the weather and walking on forest trails that may be muddy.
In the case of the Blue Ridge Parkway being closed due to inclement weather or other hazardous road conditions, this hike will be cancelled (see the Parkway closure map for current conditions).
