Lookin’ for Lichen Hike(1-3 PM)

This hike had been postponed to January 13, 2019, same place and time.
Join us on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a lichen hike! S. Coleman McCleneghan, Ph.D., Visiting Assistant Professor Department of Biology, Appalachian State University, will lead a LICHEN HIKE on December 9 at 1pm on the Flatrock Trail! The trailhead is located at milepost 308. The best conditions for lichen are 50–60 degrees and wet.
Meet at 1pm at the trailhead: milepost 308, Blue Ridge Parkway OR meet at 12pm at the Holiday Inn Express in Boone to carpool to the trailhead.
Access from 221 to the parkway is at milepost 305.
Dress for the weather (elevation near 4,000’)
Wear appropriate footwear for natural trail surface
Bring snack and water
The 1.3 mile hike is moderate in difficulty level. Following is a description of the trail:
Flat Rock Trail is a hiking trail in Avery County, North Carolina. It is within Blue Ridge Parkway. It is 0.6 miles long and begins at 3,983 feet altitude. Traveling the entire trail is 1.3 miles with a total elevation gain of 280 feet. The Flat Rock parking is near the trailhead. Flat Rock (elevation 4,094 feet) can be seen along the trail. There is also a viewpoint along the trail.
