Boone in Bloom at the Appalachian State University Nature Preserve

(7 - 9 PM)
Event Sponsor: Blue Ridge Chapter

Join the Blue Ridge Chapter for a wildflower walk at the Appalachian State University Nature Preserve! Dr. Annkatrin Rose, Associate Professor of Biology at Appalachian State University and founder of the Boone in Bloom Facebook page, will take us on a tour of the preserve to see what’s blooming in the woods and learn how this area is used for classes and research. Are you coming to the High Country a few days early for the Spring Outing in West Jefferson? Perfect! Come join us in Boone for this pre-outing opportunity to network and get tips which other trails to check out while you’re here! We will meet in the parking lot at the top of Bodenheimer Drive near the wind turbine. Bring your walking shoes and dress for the weather.

About the Nature Preserve:
The Appalachian State University Nature Preserve consists of 67 acres of protected woodlands in the heart of the campus. The land was dedicated as a state natural area under the North Carolina Nature Preserves Act in 1999, and serves as an outdoor classroom for students and faculty. The preserve consists of the largest contiguous forest area within the Town of Boone. Its mixed hardwood forest and herbaceous community are representative of southern Appalachian flora and provide a home for hundreds of native species. There are two headwater streams and a small pond created in 1976. The primary purpose of the preserve is for conservation, education, research, and recreation for students and faculty.

Rain day program:
In the case of thunderstorms or similar inclement weather, we will meet at the hotel as usual for a slide show of things in bloom. A checklist of plants and map of the preserve will be available so you can go on a self-guided tour once the weather improves.
