Growing Native!

Nursery Sources for Native Seeds and Plants

This information is provided for those of you who wish to buy NC native plants from NC nurseries.

We have compiled responses to our letter asking if a nursery abides by the NCNPS native plant provenance and invasive plant guidelines. We have taken a nursery's word and have not visited each one for verification.

We stated in our letter that:

"... For our purposes it's best to propagate from seed, tissue culture and vegetative cuttings and we do not deny the fact that "progress" will happen and some plants can be rescued from native extirpation. We do believe that collecting/digging native plants from the wild will not sustain the natural populations over time and we will not endorse nurseries that engage in or buy from people who engage in this activity.

As for invasives, now who can deny that Chinese Wisteria or Princess Trees aren't beautiful? But plants like these do far too much damage to our native plant life. We have created a list of invasive exotic plants in North Carolina. In the list, plant species are ranked according to their invasiveness, with Rank 1 presenting the most severe threat to native ecosystems. While we discourage the sale of any plants included on our list in Ranks 1-3, if you sell species in the most severe category, Rank 1, we will not list your business in our materials."

Nursery Information Form

If you should visit any of these nurseries or if you know of any other good nurseries that sell NC native plants, please send your comments or have the nursery contact us at tom[at]ncwildflower.org. The nursery may fill out the Nursery Information Form and mail it in.

For additional information on selecting suppliers, you can check the list of suitable suppliers on the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center web site, or those listed on the North Carolina Botanical Garden website. You may also be interested in whether a nursery is certified in NC (see also this searchable directory of Certified Nurseries and Plant Collectors of NC).

Placing a nursery on this list does not constitute an endorsement from the NC Native Plant Society

We recommend that you set up an appointment before visiting a nursery.
