DESCRIPTION:Time to get outside and join us Tuesday,  April 19  at 1 pm for a spring afternoon hike in the northern part of the Mayo River State Park at the Deshazo Mill Access Trail ( https://www.piedmonttrails.org/mayo-river-trail-at-mayo-river-state-park/ ). Beginning in Virginia as two small forks, the Mayo River’s confluence is just below the North Carolina state line. It flows roughly 16 miles south to the town of Mayodan in Rockingham County before joining the Dan River. This event is for members + 1 guest.\nREGISTER HERE\nDESHAZO MILL ACCESS TRAILHEAD is the trailhead for Fall Creek Falls and the Mayo River Trail, a 1.3-mile out and back trail that features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels. Sometimes referred to as “Deshazo Mill Falls”, the trailhead is just over the one-lane bridge and marked by wooden boundary poles. Parts of the trail, to the waterfall, are marked by yellow “State Park” diamonds. The trail from Deshazo Mill Access follows along Fall Creek to the 20-foot waterfall. Remnants of the mill structure’s foundation remain.\nMayo River State Park Deshazo Mill Access to Fall Creek Falls sign (by the parking area) by Angie Wheeler on All Trails\nOur hike leader Ken Bridle of the Piedmont Land Conservancy ( https://www.piedmontland.org/ ) is the chair of the Mayo River State Park Advisory Committee and is familiar with the park master plan. The hike was recommended by Triad Chapter member Jo Walker who has found the following while walking the trail: Jack-In-The-Pulpit, Trillium cuneatum, Showy Orchis, Blue Eye Grass, Crested Dwarf Iris, Fire Pink, Bloodroot, Foamflower, Wild Geranium, Phlox, Bluets, and Green & Gold. There is also a nice assortment of ferns including Maiden Hair.\nThe Deshazo Mill access is about a 20-minute drive north of the Mayo River State Park office and accessible from Anglin Mill Road. It is located in the northern part of Rockingham County, almost at the Virginia state line.
