SUMMARY:Conserving NC’s Imperiled Plants
DESCRIPTION:Lesley Starke, Program Manager of the NC Plant Conservation Program ( http://www.ncagr.gov/plantindustry/plant/plantconserve/ ), will discuss efforts to conserve North Carolina’s imperiled native plants during our online meeting.\nNorth Carolina is a botanically rich state with high species diversity, but also an increasing number of imperiled plant species. The NC Plant Conservation Program’s mission is to conserve the native flora of our state, now and for future generations. That means understanding the threats to the native plants and building conservation programs to mitigate those threats for the long-term survival of our unique natural history. One strategy is to permanently protect the habitats where these plants grow and to manage those sites for the target plant species as well as the natural communities they call home.\n\nLesley Starke is the Program Manager for the NC Plant Conservation Program ( http://www.ncagr.gov/plantindustry/plant/plantconserve/ ). Her background is in nature preserve design and land/species conservation strategies. She is passionate about active, adaptive management of special places and imperiled species. In her eleven years with the Plant Conservation Program, she has been able to participate in and observe many tangible successes in plant conservation and is excited about sharing those stories with others.\nThis program is open to the public.
