SUMMARY:Preserving Native Plants in the Foothills of NC
DESCRIPTION:Please join the new Foothills Chapter of the NC Native Plant Society (NCNPS) for our first public meeting, where we’ll be welcoming speakers Ryan Sparks and Erin Canter from the Foothills Conservancy of NC (FCNC).\nRyan and Erin will be reviewing the importance of native plants to our ecosystem and describing the Conservancy’s efforts to conserve and restore native habitat on properties they own for permanent conservation throughout the Foothills. They’ll also be talking about the exciting new native plant garden under construction at Oak Hill Community Park and Forest in Morganton.\nAfter the talk, you’ll be introduced to the steering committee for the NCNPS Foothills Chapter and have an opportunity to tell us what kinds of activities you would like to see the chapter become involved in. This will be our very first public meeting and we need your input!\nLight refreshments will be served.\nAbout our speakers:\nRyan Sparks, Stewardship Director\nRyan joined FCNC in 2016. His love for the Blue Ridge Mountains, coupled with a passion to protect their one-of-a-kind forests and natural features, inspired him to pursue a career in conservation and protecting our southern Appalachian forests. Ryan earned a Master of Forest Resources and a Master of Arts in Nonprofit Organizations from the University of Georgia.\nErin Canter, Community Engagement Manager\nErin joined FCNC in the spring of 2026. Before moving to Western North Carolina, Erin worked with community science volunteers and students in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee to study and connect to the vast biodiversity that makes Southern Appalachia uniquely beautiful.\n
