SUMMARY:Birds, Bugs, and Blooms Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:Bill Dunson will lead the third Saturday “Birds, Bugs and Blooms” nature\nwalk on September 19, 2020 at 8:30-10:45 am.  We will walk a 2.5 mile\nlong loop on the Boone Greenway and Kennedy Trails.  Meet at the parking\nlot off Hunting Hills Lane (turn at new community pool/fire station on\nState Farm Rd and turn left just before the river bridge into lot).  All\nmust wear covid masks and practice social distancing.  No dogs or\nsmoking please.  Rain or shine.  No reservations.  Contact\nwdunson@comcast.net ( mailto:wdunson@comcast.net ) for additional information.\nThe purpose of the walk is to identify plants and animals seen and to\ndiscuss community ecological interactions and how they are influenced by\nhumans both past and present.  Despite the fact that the Greenway is\nnear the heart of Boone it contains a wide variety of natural, disturbed\nand created habitats.  The wide trail passes along the headwaters of the\nS Fork of the New River, through a mature white pine forest, across\nrecreational fields, along created/restored wetlands in the alluvial\nriver floodplain, up a hill into sub-climax hardwood forests, and\nthrough a former farmed area with degraded vegetation.  We will be\nespecially looking for bioindicators of previous land uses (such as\nshade intolerant black locust and white pine), the proliferation of\nexotic species (such as bittersweet and barberry), and evidence of\nwidespread damage due to deer herbivory (understory sapling species tend\nto be toxic and do not match trees present overhead).\nBill Dunson is a retired biology professor from Penn State University.\nYou can access his nature blog at:\nhttps://lemonbayconservancy.org/news/nature-notes-by-bill-dunson/\n
