SUMMARY:Native Plant Solutions: Managing Water in Your Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday, April 2nd at the KCE Library to learn about managing water in your landscape. Our speaker will be Shannon Currey with Izel Plants. Meeting starts at 6:30pm.\nTraditionally, built structures and hardscape did the heavy lifting when it came to managing water and runoff in our landscapes. While that’s often still the case, we now recognize that plants, soils, and natural systems have a greater role to play. Not only do they provide solutions, but they also add ecological benefits and build resilience. This presentation focuses on plant-based solutions for managing the water that falls on our landscapes. We’ll discuss how we treat it and how to make plant choices that support its role as a precious resource. We’ll take a deep dive into a handful of specific native plants that are well adapted for drainage areas—at the base of downspouts, in ditches, near air conditioning outlets, or anywhere that water collects—focusing on characteristics and adaptations that make these plants particularly helpful. Leave the presentation with a better understanding of how plants can improve drainage and help your garden in the face of increasingly severe storms.\n\nShannon Currey is a horticultural educator with Izel Native Plants. She’s worked in the nursery trade since 2006 and has established herself as an expert on grasses and sedges, with a focus on native species. She has shared her knowledge in nationally published articles and traveled the country speaking to professional organizations, community groups, and at public gardens. She currently serves on the North Carolina Plant Conservation Program Scientific Committee, advises several organizations on horticultural programming, and has served on the Boards of the Perennial Plant Association and the Perennial Plant Foundation. Shannon lives in Durham, North Carolina and loves exploring the native flora everywhere she goes.\nThis event is open to the public, all are welcome to attend!\n\n
