SUMMARY:Tour of Private Nature Preserve on Haw River (near Graham)
DESCRIPTION:Visit a private 50 acre nature preserve along the Haw River in eastern Alamance County and hike 1.5 miles for about two hours along shady mowed/sandy trails to examine the plant and animal biodiversity of the wetlands and uplands.\nThe predominantly forested area has undergone considerable changes since colonists arrived in the 1700’s.  Yet there are old growth trees and thriving wetlands and uplands despite a long history of land and water degradation by the textile industry and agriculture.\nChallenge yourself to learn some of the 200+ species of plants present and predict what the area will look like 100 years in the future.  Examine the role of non-native plants and how deer have severely impacted forest regeneration.  We will also examine the design of some backyard pollinator gardens and debate the merits of different plants to benefit wildlife.\nOpen to all with group cap of 20.  Waitlist started. Register here.\n \n
