SUMMARY:Field Trip: Using iNaturalist to Learn About Native Plants with Ann Walter-Fromson
DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about using the iNaturalist app? Join us for a ramble around Price Park on Wednesday, November 9 to look for interesting plants to document and identify. Bring your smart phone with the free iNaturalist app downloaded (iOS or Android), and be sure to create an account with iNaturalist.org ( https://www.inaturalist.org/ ) before you come. We’ll meet in front of Kathleen Clay Edwards Library at 10:00 a.m. and will explore the park for about an hour and a half.\nAnn Walter-Fromson is giving (or gave, depending on when you read this) a presentation on using iNaturalist to learn about native plants (for the Triad’s November 2, 2022 monthly meeting). Features of the app and website Ann shares include how the iNaturalist community can help with plant identification, with understanding the timing of plant life-cycle events, and where specific plants are found.\n\nA retired psychology professor, Ann Walter-Fromson is an active member of the Triad chapter of the NC Native Plant Society, T. Gilbert Pearson Audubon Society in Guilford County, and Piedmont Bird Club. She is a certified NC Environmental Educator, and a 2017 graduate of the Certificate in Native Plant Studies program at the NC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, for which she conducted an independent research study of pollinators attracted to the native plants in her yard.\nOne of Ann’s observations on iNaturalist, Downy Lobelia (Lobelia puberula)\nThis program is free and open to the public, and all are welcome!\nIn-person meeting – [no Zoom]  We will be meeting in front of Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch of the Greensboro Library (1420 Price Park Dr., Greensboro, NC 27410).\nMany of our monthly programs are also posted on the NC Native Plant Society YouTube Channel ( https://www.youtube.com/c/ncwildflowers ) within a couple weeks (when all goes well). It can be used for identification when you have no internet or satellite connection and was designed to engage young people by providing challenges and achievement awards. Each time you make a new observation, it is added to a tally of that group, such as plants, insects, and birds. Earn a badge for all the challenges you seek!\n
