SUMMARY:Walk in Haw River Private Preserve (Graham, NC)
DESCRIPTION:A new Reid Chapter member, Bill Dunson, and his wife, recently purchased 36 acres of very interesting habitat along the western side of the Haw River at the Union Bridge in easternmost Alamance County (about halfway between Saxapahaw and Chicken Bridges) There are some astonishing huge trees, and an aboriginal fish weir perhaps more than 600 years old. Another aspect of their 36 acre nature preserve is to illustrate the significant value of such private efforts when so much habitat is being destroyed by development.\nThe vegetation is a biodiverse mixture of old field succession and old growth forest. We will focus on identifying the plants and animals seen/heard and in adding to and correcting a plant list in preparation.  An additional focus will be on major ecological communities and features of the old growth forest with a special emphasis on historical effects and the huge role of herbivores/deer.\nThe Dunsons have recently finished a loop trail with side branches around the property which is about 1 mile long.  The footing in sand and clay is cleared but not graded so there are some partially rough parts.  There is a 50 foot hill to climb and descend so a walking stick can be handy.\nMore details on location will be provided to registrants.\nGroup Limit 18. Registration is now FULL.  Please see the  Signup Link for waitlist information and new event listing here for September 22nd.\n
