Wednesday Wildflower Walks with Ann Walter-Fromson and Lisa Lofland Gould

(9:30 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. (see below for details))
Event Sponsor: Triad Chapter

(Bloodroot by Ann Walter-Fromson)

Join Ann Walter-Fromson and Lisa Lofland Gould for Wednesday morning wildflower walks in March and April co-sponsored by the Triad Chapter of NCNPS, T. Gilbert Pearson Audubon Society, and Forsyth Audubon. We will visit watershed trails and area preserves along with three new locations in Forsyth County to observe nature’s beautiful show of ephemeral spring wildflowers. Ann will lead the four walks in Guilford and Rockingham Counties and Lisa will lead the three walks in Forsyth County.

You’re welcome to join in for any or all of these walks. Wear sturdy walking shoes as trails may be muddy or slippery in places. You may want to bring binoculars (close-focus binoculars are particularly good for viewing small flowers), a walking stick, insect repellant, a wildflower field guide, a camera, water, and a snack. No pets, please.

1. 9:30 a.m., March 14 – Laurel Bluff Trail: We start at the N. Church Street trail head and walk west through woodlands overlooking Lake Townsend. About 3 miles of walking; this section of the trail is quite hilly. Parking for trail access is a small gravel lot on the other (east) side of Church Street, south of the safety crossing.

2. 10:00 a.m., March 21 – Salem Lake in Forsyth County: We will meet at the south entrance to Salem Lake (the Point Parking lot, 1001 Salem Lake Road, Winston-Salem NC 27107), in the parking lot to the right of the entrance road, just before the stop sign and the parking area for the Marina (you will see a jungle gym/playground and a building with restrooms adjoining that lot). We will gather on the lake side of the restroom building. We will walk about 3 miles, on a level trail.

3. 9:30 a.m., March 28 – Cascades Preserve: We will hike the Falling Waters Trail, which takes us on wooded slopes along the cascades of a beautiful creek, where we will look for wildflowers. About 1.5 miles of walking, moderate difficulty.

4. CANCELED 10:00 a.m., April 4 –

5. 9:30 a.m., April 11 - Knight Brown Preserve: We begin on the Beechwood Bottom Trail and continue on the Creekside Loop trail to see which wildflowers are in bloom at this pristine site owned by Piedmont Land Conservancy. About 2 miles of walking, some of it hilly.

6. 9:30 a.m., April 18 – Richardson-Taylor Preserve: We will walk part the wetlands loop trail that overlooks an area of prior beaver activity, as well as part of the Mountains-to-Sea trail, and see what wildflowers we can find. About 2 miles of mostly easy walking with some slopes.

7. 10:00 a.m., April 25 – Black Walnut Bottoms in Bethania: We will meet in the parking lot of Bethania Town Hall, which is also the trailhead for Black Walnut Bottoms.
