Recently I visited Fontainebleau State Park on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana.

From a trail and plant guide there I was surprised to learn that Sabal minor grows there.
The guide book states, “This evergreen palm, which arises from a subterranean rootstock and has no trunk, is abundant from the dry hills of northern Louisiana to the cypress swamps of the alluvial floodplain. Native Americans used its palms for weaving baskets and for thatching roofs.”
