I found something similar to this listera australis in a dark deep hardwood forest leaf mulch on Aug. 1, 2010, next to a decaying old farmhouse. I am curious to know if I have found something rare or new, although I am just an “armchair horticulturist”. It has five oval petals that are purple-reddish, just like the rest of the spike and stem. I could not locate leaves, only 1 to 2 ft. flower spikes. The front of the flower was somewhat less whiskery at the front than this picture but has a long rearward extending tubule that projects from the bottom assemblage of three petals. The interior of the flower has a pale greenish color and the easily detached bright yellow pistil. Everything else is puplish red.
Other pictures on your site that hint at my find are of platanthera nivea (wrong color),corallorhiza odontorhiza, and especially tipularia discolor for flower shape (color is too pale).
Unfortunately, I managed to get pictures after the spikes had begun wilting inside my house, but would love for someone to contact me for those photos at [email hidden to protect poster - Ed].
