We will meet at 10:00 at the parking area for the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest Loop Trail. We will focus on the many fern species that are along the trail and learn about key features that will help with fern identification. The U.S. Forest Service describes the trail “as a figure eight pattern. On the lower slopes it traverses through an acidic cove forest dominated by tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), black birch (Betula lenta), yellow buckeye (Aesculus flava), and sadly dead eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis). The upper slopes along the trail support a rich cove forest dominated by tulip poplar, yellow buckeye, basswood (Tilia americana var. heterophylla), red oak (Quercus rubra), silverbell (Halesia tetraptera), and cucumber-tree (Magnolia acuminata).”
Please dress appropriately and bring plenty of water to drink. After the hike we can have lunch in the picnic area and possibly explore another trail if people feel up to it!

We will start at the Craggy Gardens picnic area and follow the Mountain-to-the-Sea Trail to where it crosses the BRP near the Graybeard Mt. Overlook. This will be about a 3 mile hike. At the end of the hike we can do an optional and short hike, 1.4-mile roundtrip, to the top of the 5,892-foot summit Craggy Pinnacle at Craggy Gardens. At the top is a spectacular 360-degree view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Please wear sturdy shoes, bring raingear, plenty of water, and snacks.

“Hike this double-summit, ultra-scenic five-mile loop on the Art Loeb and Ivestor Gap trails, summiting Black Balsam Knob and Tennent Mountain. It’s a sun-drenched, blueberry and blackberry-filled adventure over two bald mountains to some incredible views.” The 5.1 mile roundtrip hike is rated moderate. Weather can change quickly especially at these elevations so come prepared and bring plenty of water and food. After the hike we can visit the hanging bog at Wolf Mt. overlook along the BRP.
